What is chalcedony?
A quiet member of the quartz family.
Chalcedony is a compact, microcrystalline form of quartz, found mainly in sedimentary and volcanic environments. Stones sold simply as chalcedony are mostly translucent and one color; the finest are translucent or richly pigmented. Its family is large: agate, carnelian, bloodstone, jasper, chrysoprase, flint, onyx and sardonyx are all types of chalcedony, along with colored varieties such as red or pink chalcedony.
A treasured gem since the Bronze Age.
Chalcedony takes its name from Chalcedon, the ancient Greek port where gemstones were mined and traded. It was treasured as early as the Bronze Age, and seals, tools and jewelry carved from it, dating back to 1800 BC, have been found where Romans, Greeks and Babylonians lived. Goblets carved from chalcedony and lined with silver were believed to prevent poisoning, and indigenous tribes hold the stone sacred and use it in special ceremonies.
In crystal tradition, chalcedony is considered a powerful cleanser, said to absorb negative energy and dissipate it, ease self-doubt and encourage constructive inward reflection and an open, enthusiastic spirit. It is believed to be closely linked to the moon and is considered a calming stone. In crystal energy work it is associated with every chakra, from the Root, Sacral and Solar Plexus to the Heart, Throat, Third Eye and Crown, and is used to cleanse and align them all.
