5 Things You Didn’t Know About Rhodonite

More crystal meanings on our blog at www.crystalgemstones.net

Humankind has always been in survival mode, from building fires and weapons in primitive times to the evolution into what we now refer to as “selfishness”. Whatever one does, however one does it, essentially it’s all done with undertones of our primal instinct to survive – and this will either be viewed by others as self-love or selfishness. In modern times and especially now, even for those experiencing life from a more difficult place, it’s become a popular theme to love and respect yourself. Individuality has been made such a priority through the process of self-preservation by building resilience that it’s not uncommon to hear a spiritually-aware person speaking on their practices of self-love as unashamed as the day they were born. Rhodonite’s properties reflect that of this very quest: the quest to find and love oneself through dignity, confidence, strength, and the belief that anything you can dream you can achieve. It is a stone which balances the emotional body, teaching you how to exist with confidence while also understanding your own limitations as well as the limitations of others. This gentle pink stone of the essence of love bridges the gap between the heart and the mind, instilling wisdom and compassion in every decision made. As we explore five things you didn’t know about rhodonite, we’ll find the root of every human motivation and find that the heart is always concerned.

1. Rhodonite, the origins of love

Although first discovered in the Ural mountains of Russia, Rhodonite gets its name from the Greek word rhodon meaning “rose” or “pink”. Local villagers in Russia discovered the stone atop a tree, inside the nest of an eagle and devised that this is what gave them their strength. They quickly began putting rhodonite in cribs of their own to instill in their children the very strength and freedom which these majestic birds represented.

2. Rhodonite, worthy of love and respect, much like yourself

With its origins in the mountains of Russia, it’s no wonder this stone held such a special place in their society. It was prized beyond measure, having been used for many and endless decorative pieces inside grand palaces, from vases to columns. The Tsar Alexander II had the headstone for the grave of his spouse made entirely of rhodonite, which took 16 years to make and polish by hand – it was installed in the Cathedral of St. Petersburg in 1906.

3. Rhodonite’s powers through history

Aside from the obvious appeal of this delicate pink stone, it was treasured throughout history for many different reasons. In the middle ages, it was believed to hold magical powers that could bring the owner joy, happiness, honor, and deeper bonds within friendships. The Greeks and Romans would wear rhodonite amulets as they believed that it would provide protection against attacks and thieves on long voyages. In Russia, it was customary to give the gift of a rhodonite figurine to a bride and groom on their wedding day as it was believed to protect newlyweds.

4. Rhodonite, love even after life

The largest piece of Rhodonite exists in Russia, its home. As customary for funerals, the variety of rhodonite with mostly black inclusions was used to fashion the casket which holds the body of the Empress Maria Alexandrovna. The casket took several years to complete, including carving, artistic processing, and transportation to St. Petersburg. Upon completion, the casket weighed almost seven tons and now rests in the family tomb of the Romanovs.

5. Rhodonite and healing

Physically, rhodonite offers a range of healing benefits for the body and its contained organs, including the nervous system. Perhaps little known is its ability to treat arthritis, emphysema, stomach ulcers, hearing issues, as well as treating wounds and insect bites. It is also believed to promote fertility. Metaphysically, rhodonite is a great companion for anyone seeking stability, strength and overall excellent mental health. As it stabilizes the emotional body, rhodonite also nourishes love and stimulates one’s sense of loyalty and brotherhood. In cases of mental instability, this gentle pink stone helps us to shift our perspective and look at both sides of a situation – the positive and the negative – to promote feelings of objectivity, positivity, and forgiveness.

*although crystals are great for healing purposes, it’s important to seek proper medical treatment if you are suffering from any physical or mental illness*
